Solid State Drives in Laptops - A good idea?

Now that the prices have come down significantly for Solid State drives (SSD) in laptops... Are they a good idea over traditional SATA drives?

They definitely can be but be aware of one really key thing:

"SSD random write performance is more negatively impacted by applications which use small packet sizes. An application like Microsoft® Outlook®, that issues a significant number of small block random write commands can overwhelm an SSD when Outlook mail file sizes are allowed to grow over 1.5 to 2 GB"

The good news: "Solid State Drives (SSD) provide significant performance advantages over traditional hard drives during random and sequential read operations due to their lack of moving parts. SSDs do have inherently lower write performance, especially during random writes.
