Tether your Android device and laptop with Tether.com app and software

Tether was released for iPhone, Android and Blackberry devices this week. Installing the Tether app on your device and their software on your computer will allow you to connect to the Internet using the 3G connection on your phone without incurring charges from your carrier. NOTE: You must connect via USB cable from the computer to the phone. (There is a bluetooth option but I haven't tried that.)

If you have an iPhone, no luck for you. Apple pulled the plug on downloading the Tether app from the App Store after 12 hours. I'm slightly bummed because I wanted to be able to tether from each of my devices but the good news is I have an Android phone so it works just fine.

Here's an article from ComputerWorld about the issue with Apple pulling the Tether app.

RIM's Blackberry Fusion to manage Apple's iOS, Android and Blackberry (not Windows devices)

Interesting move by RIM to change company strategy (had to). This is a good move, in theory. The management of smartphones (including security) and mobile devices for the IT Enterprise is very limited. This is a great concept. Let's see if it works in action.
------------------------------------------------------------------
RIM's upcoming BlackBerry Mobile Fusion management platform supports not only BlackBerry but also Apple’s iPhone and Google Android.

From eWeek article.

Research In Motion has long touted enterprise-level security and management as a selling point of its BlackBerry devices, a key differentiator from the Apple iPhones and Google Android smartphones flooding both the business and consumer market.

Now, it seems, RIM has decided to extend its branded management capabilities to platforms beyond BlackBerry, in what could represent a significant strategy change for the company.
RIM’s upcoming BlackBerry Mobile Fusion is designed, in the words of the company’s Nov. 29 press release, to “simplify the management of smartphones and tablets running BlackBerry, Google Android and Apple iOS operating systems.”

In other words, IT administrators and CIOs will have the ability to control all those devices via a Web-based console, from instituting security policies to managing applications. For those shops continuing to support BlackBerry devices, RIM will include BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0.3, which offers features such as over-the-air app and software installation.

Why Third-Party Email Archiving

From: Why Third-Party Email Archiving

If you move your email to the cloud, you also have the option of adding on email archiving from a third party. Archiving your email is a smart business decision, but with so many options out there, choosing the best solution for your organization can be an overwhelming undertaking.

Some providers, like Google and Microsoft, have developed their own hosted archiving solutions, while others (e.g., Intermedia) have teamed up with third-party archiving providers to offer more complete solutions.

Third-party archiving offers a lot of benefits that you might not receive if you choose to use a built-in solution (i.e., a feature of your cloud email platform, such as Microsoft Exchange 2010 or Google Apps Premier). There are several things you should consider before you choose an email archiving solution. While a basic, built-in solution may work well for some companies, a more comprehensive solution may be in order for others. Answering the following questions is a good place to start.

Are you, have you been or are you likely to be involved in a lawsuit of any kind? If so, you need an email archiving solution with comprehensive e-discovery features.

Is your company heavily regulated (i.e., do you have to adhere to specific regulations, such as FINRA, SEC, SOX, GLBA, HIPAA, etc.)? Keep in mind, any company that has a chance of being involved in litigation within the U.S. Federal Court System must comply with the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP).

Do you want to equip your end users with access to their own personal archives? This valuable tool significantly reduces the burden on your IT resources and allows your staff to be more productive overall.

Are you concerned about email storage quotas (even after moving to a hosted email provider)? According to a recent Radicati Group, Inc. study, the number of worldwide email users is projected to increase from over 1.4 billion in 2009 to almost 1.9 billion by 2013. In addition, while worldwide email traffic will total 247 billion messages per day in 2009, this figure will almost double to 507 billion messages per day by 2013. It is imperative to keep this unprecedented growth in mind as you determine what archiving solution best meets your specific needs.

In many cases, you may need a more robust email archiving solution than the one being offered by your cloud email provider. However, only a select few third-party email archiving solutions will seamlessly integrate with your chosen cloud-based email solution so choose carefully. You want to make sure your solution meets key business requirements.

Compliance – meet the strictest regulatory requirements.
Continuity – keep your business running in the event of a disaster or unplanned downtime.
Flexibility – easily move to another email service provider in the future.

Instant Search not finding messages - Outlook 2007

Instant Search is not finding items

Applies to: Microsoft Office Outlook 2007

If searches in Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 don't locate the items you're looking for, the most common reason is that the indexing of your Outlook data files is incomplete. Also, if you or your organization are using encryption for message security, this can prevent some of your e-mail messages from being found during a search.

Symptoms
Instant Search is enabled, but when you search for items in Outlook, no search results appear, or the ones that do appear don't match your search criteria.

For the complete listing of steps, follow this jump to Microsoft Outlook Help.
