Recycle Your Old Computer Hardware, April 22

Cook Group Technology, LLC is pleased to once again offer free e-cycling services to our clients.

When?
On Saturday April 22, as part of the DC Department of Public Works program and Earth Day, we will be scheduling and picking up old computer equipment to be recycled (e-cycled) throughout DC.

Why is E-cycling Important?
Electronics can pose serious environmental hazards if not disposed of properly.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), consumer electronics are responsible for about 40% of lead found in landfills.

The primary concern is the possibility of lead leaking out of the landfills and contaminating water supplies. The EPA tells us that there are approximately four pounds of lead in each computer monitor and old television. As lead accumulates in the environment it can damage the human nervous system, the blood system, and kidneys.

What Can be E-Cycled?
Computers, laptops, monitors, printers, memory, fax machines, spare computer parts...

So, let's be part of the solution, not the problem.

Affordable and Removable Backup Capabilities For Small Businesses
By Small Business Pipeline Staff
March 09, 2006

Iomega Corp. today announced a desktop autoloader for small business backup and archival purposes. Called the Iomega REV Loader 280, the product provides access to 280 gigabytes of storage, managing up to eight removable 35 gigabyte REV disks.

Specifically designed for small businesses, the product connects to a server through a ISB 2.0 interface, simplifying its use as a backup and archive device for networked computers, at a cost far less than traditional SCSI-based tape drives. The product delivers automated, multi-disk data protection at a price similar to single tape drive products. CA BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Windows is bundled with the REV Loader 280, which includes support for disaster recovery.
The Iomega REV Loader 280 also has a small form factor--just 7 inches tall and 5 inches wide--and costs approximately half as much as competing automation tape products, according to the company.

The Iomega REV Loader 280 desktop autoloader will be available in early April at a price of approximately $1,000. Iomega REV 35-gigabyte disks are now available for $50 per disk in quantities of four.

McAfee update - Not "Excel"lent At All

Not good for McAfee... but it happens....
--------------------------

McAfee update exterminates Excel
By Joris Evers Staff Writer, CNET News.com
Published: March 10, 2006, 6:34 PM PST

For a brief period on Friday, McAfee's security tools killed more than viruses.
An error in McAfee's virus definition file released Friday morning caused the company's consumer and enterprise antivirus products to flag Microsoft's Excel, as well as other applications on users' PCs, as a virus called W95/CTX, Joe Telafici, director of operations at McAfee's Avert labs, told CNET News.com.

"At about 1 p.m. PST we started getting reports that people were seeing an unusual number of W95/CTX infections in their environment," Telafici said. "Files that we did identify would probably be deleted or quarantined, depending on your settings."

When a file gets quarantined, it's renamed and moved to a different folder. McAfee's antivirus software detected Excel.exe and Graph.exe, two Microsoft Office components, as well as other software, including AdobeUpdateManager.exe, an application installed alongside Adobe products that deals with software updates, Telafici said.

About 100 customers, individuals as well as corporations, reported the problem, Telafici said. McAfee, the world's second largest antivirus software vendor, rushed to fix the mistake. Consumers were automatically reverted to the older definition files at about 2:30 p.m. and an update was pushed to corporate users an hour later, he said.
